American Bank of the North is privately held and is a subsidiary of Mesaba Bancshares, a multi-bank holding company. The total operations has 16 branch offices and 2 administrative offices throughout Northeastern Minnesota . We have three different regions, each with its own president who report directly to the CEO of American Bank of the North.

Prior to April, 2002 - the bank owned three charters; Itasca State Bank, American Bank of the North, and Mt. Iron First State Bank. The first Itasca State Bank was opened prior to 1980 in Calumet , MN . In 1982, Itasca State Bank opened their second location in Grand Rapids , MN adding the third location in 1990, fourth in 2001 and acquired the fifth location in Bovey , MN in 2002.

American National Bank in Nashwauk, MN was purchased in 1989 and became, American Bank of the North. The Keewatin office was acquired in 1993, Hibbing Downtown location in 1998 and the Wal*Mart branch in 2001.

In 1992, we purchased Mt. Iron First State Bank - the name remained the same. In 1993 they acquired a branch office in Biwabik, in 1995 a branch office opened in Orr and in 1998 a branch office opened in Cook, MN.

In April of 2002, the three Mesaba Banks merged to form American Bank of the North. Since the merger, American Bank of the North has re-aligned duties and functions to act as one bank.
