American Bank launches financial literacy program for area high school students
PRESS RELEASE — American Bank is reaching out to high school students through the EverFi™ Financial Literacy Program.
The web-based initiative uses the latest in new media technologies — simulation, avatars, gaming and adaptive pathing — to bring complex financial concepts to life for today’s digital generation.
Through the EverFi™ platform, students will become certified in hundreds of topics in financial education, allowing them to become more informed, responsible citizens.
American Bank of the North has partnered with EverFi™ Inc., to bring the interactive financial management program to these high school students at no cost to the schools.
"From the small rural towns to major cities across the U.S., EverFi™ technology is literally transforming how students learn, and we are incredibly grateful for the public-private partnerships that make this possible," said EverFi™ CEO Tom Davidson. "American Bank is critical to the success of our mission to ensure that these cutting-edge tools reach all communities."
When EverFi™ approached us with this opportunity we knew it would be a great fit for American Bank, as we realize the importance of financial literacy and teaching our younger generation early, said Marci Knight, corporate vice president of American Bank. "We were looking for an opportunity to partner with the schools and introduce our ‘Bank on it,’" — American Bank’s All-Star Scholarship Program.
She said American Bank is "committed to preparing our local high school students to make sound financial decisions." The program has been offered to eight local high schools, with hopes to have all of them participating in the program this year, Knight said. In addition to the students being certified, American Bank is providing each participating high school with two $500 scholarships to be awarded to their students.
"We’re excited about the program and the financial knowledge it brings to the students", said Knight.
The EverFi™-Financial Literacy learning course is aimed at teaching, assessing, and certifying students in a variety of relevant financial topics, including credit scores, insurance, credit cards, student loans, mortgages, taxes, stocks, savings, 401ks, and other critical elements of financial literacy standards.
The platform uniquely tracks the progress and scores of every student and provides students who successfully complete the course with Certification in Financial Literacy, a valuable mark of distinction on college applications and resumes.
EverFi Inc. is the leading education technology company focused on teaching, assessing, and certifying K-12 and college students in the critical skills they need for life. The company teams with major corporations and foundations to provide the programs at no cost to K-12 schools.
American Bank of the North is privately held and is a subsidiary of Mesaba Bancshares, a multi-bank holding company. It has 12 branch offices and two administrative offices in northeastern Minnesota and employs 195 people.
Help Us Tackle Hunger!
With the start of the school year and with winter just around the corner, the demand on the Area Food Shelf will be increasing. In honor of Women of Today Week and the start of the school year, the Virginia Area Women of Today is sponsoring a “Food Fight”, a food drive that encourages school spirit and a little friendly competition between three local schools. The event will take place at a home football game for each school: Virginia, Eveleth-Gilbert, and Mountain Iron-Buhl. Students and fans will be encouraged to bring in non-perishable food items to our donation bin outside the football game. For each item donated, they will receive an entry into a drawing for a certificate for spirit wear, with the winner being announced at half-time at each game.
In addition to a fan being eligible for a prize, each school will be competing to bring in the most food (in relation to school enrollment). The winning school will be awarded a cash donation as well.
The Virginia Area Women of Today and the area’s students are proud to serve this cause and encourage family, friends and football fans to bring a non-perishable food item to the following home games:
Virginia vs GNK, Friday, 09/06/13
EG vs Duluth Marshall, Thursday 09/12/13
MIB vs Silver Bay, 09/13/13
A member of our group will be present to receive the donations, distribute the tickets, and announce the winner during half time.
